The 4th of July in 2020

Let’s be honest – this year is not at all what we expected it to be. Many of the things we look forward to every year have to change and that includes some of the major holidays that we love so much – like the 4th of July.

On the 4th of July, we usually enjoy large gatherings, fireworks, great American food, and the spirit of being all together, celebrating the birth of the American independence.

A little bit about the 4th of July

The 4th of July has been celebrated as the birth of American independence since 1776. The holiday is usually celebrated with fireworks, family gatherings, big parades and even concerts – making it one of the most festive days of the year.

On the 4th of July, the Continental Congress formally adopted the Declaration of Independence – considered to largely be written by Jefferson. The holiday has been largely celebrated ever since its adoption – with bonfires, firing of muskets and cannons, large parades and even public readings of the Declaration of Independence.

What we know about the 4th of July, 2020

New York City’s annual Fourth of July celebration will go on “one way or another,” Mayor Bill de Blasio said Wednesday.

The 4th of July is considered way too big of a celebration to be ignored. The mayor notes that there will still be fireworks in 2020. However, where they will be performed and how is still under consideration.

Social distancing guidelines

No matter what, New Yorkers will still have to adhere to social distancing guidelines. The mayor notes that “This year’s show will be a celebration of the strength and resilience of New York City and will honor frontline workers across America.”

  • The 2020 Pride march, concerts, festivals and parades have been canceled!
  • Social distancing is top priority, especially on the 4th of July.

Celebrate the 4th of July (safely) with a family gathering!

Since up to 25 people can currently gather in the state of New York, that means you can still have your friends and family gathering on the 4th of July.

To get the best out of the holiday you can make a traditional 4th of July barbecue with foods usually including potato salad, macaroni salad, hot dogs, hamburgers, baked beans, pies like apple, blueberry, chocolate, and pecan, lemonade, iced tea, and potato chips. Yummy!

With some music, good food and friends and family around, there is no way not to enjoy yourself.

What can I expect from the 4th of July, 2020?

What you can expect this year is not the usual traditional parades and concerts but a more intimate and special 4th of July.

The focus this year should be on spending time with family, enjoying delicious food, remembering the true meaning of this holiday and focusing on what you can do rather than what you cannot.

Remember that this year is dedicated to the frontline workers across the US, that make sure every day that we get to be as safe as possible. Do you know someone who is a frontline worker? You can surprise them by dedicating a party in their honour.
