How do different generations travel? Is there a difference between Gen Z, Millennials, and Boomers when it comes to traveling?

Who spends the most on a holiday?

When it comes to traveling and budget, different generations have diverse opinions. Who spends the most on trips and holidays? And who is more concerned about costs and budgets?

  • 13% of Gen X’s budget goes to tours or different tourist attractions
  • 25% of Gen Z’s budget is spent on flights.
  • 33% of Millennials would spend $5,000 or more on their vacations
  • 81% of Gen Z said their budget is a strong issue when deciding on bookings

Where do they travel?

In terms of destination, let’s take a look at domestic and international. Who is more likely to travel overseas, and who is more eager to travel only domestically?

  • Who is the one that travels to domestic destinations:
    • 42% of Millennials have taken domestic trips
    • 51% of Gen Xers are traveling to domestic destinations
    • 51% of Boomers have traveled to a domestic tourist destination
  • Who is more likely to travel to international destinations:
    • 7% of Millennials have traveled overseas
    • 3% of Gen X have taken international trips
    • 6% of Boomers are traveling to international destinations

How much do they travel?

The average days of vacations per year vary depending on the generation that’s traveling. See how much varies:

  • Generation Z (born between 2001 – 2015): an average of 29 days of vacation per year
  • Generation X (born between 1965 – 1980): 26 days of vacation per year
  • Millennials (beginning of the ’80s – beginning ’00s): 35 days of vacation per year

Why do they travel?

Let’s take a look at the different motivations for people to travel.

  • Visiting family and friends
    • Gen Z: 56% will travel to visit their friends and families
    • Millennial: 50% take trips in order to see their families and friends
    • Boomers: 57% are willing to travel to visit relatives and friends
  • Relax and avoid stress
    • 47% of Millennials travel to reduce stress and to relax.
    • 40% of Gen Z travels for relaxation.
