To celebrate International Women’s Day in 2020, we made a list of our favorite solo female travel bloggers.
International Women’s Day (March 8) is a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of all women. The 8th of March also marks a call to action for accelerating gender parity.
Information and data collected from: BrandonGaille and Inspiring Women.
The day is all about unity, celebration, reflection, advocacy and action and has been a celebration occurring for over a century now with the first gathering happening in 1911.
Gloria Steinem who is a world-renowned feminist, journalist and activist once explained “The story of women’s struggle for equality belongs to no single feminist nor to any one organization but to the collective efforts of all who care about human rights.”
Solo female travelers
Traveling the world alone is scary! It is even scarier when you are a woman. However, many women travel the world alone and experience things on their own. Traveling alone can be amazing – nobody tells you what to do, no need to argue where to have lunch that day, no need to wait for people to wake up in the morning, you choose what to see and what not to see – it can be amazing.
Many people report that their solo trips are their favorite ones. The following list of our favorite solo female travelers features amazing and brave women that are constantly jumping over barriers and taking life into their own hands. Those women show us that with the right research and preparation, it’s safe for a woman to travel almost anywhere in the world! We hope the following women inspire you to follow your dreams and maybe even take the first step today.
The following bloggers are more than welcome to put the badge on their blog and share their nomination with their own readers. Thanks for your awesome work!
Jessie on a Journey
Jessie believes that life is a journey
“We’re influenced by so many outside voices — family, friends, the media, society — that we sometimes silence our own inner desires.”
Her goal is to give you the tools you need to make your big travel dreams and nomadic lifestyle a reality — consciously, creatively & with confidence! Together with her you can embrace the mantra #DontWonderWhatIf and set off #BeyondTheGuidebook, swapping cookie-cutter travel for transformative experiences that also allow us to discover our own gifts and put good back in the world.
Teacake Travels
Teacake travels is for those of us who have no idea how to prepare for your adventure or finance it. For those who need some extra courage and support to go to the destinations other people think you can’t handle. And for those who are worried about how to travel safely as a woman.
Alice didn’t travel until she was 25. She told herself that she couldn’t afford to travel. That she should work hard and stick to a ‘real job’. She said to herself, ‘You’ll get lost if you leave home. You won’t be able to protect yourself. How will you communicate in another language?!’. She told herself she wouldn’t be ‘capable’ when in reality, all of us can do amazing things if we allow ourselves to. Check out her blog to find out how.

Simon Falvo is a travel writer and photographer, a digital Marketing specialist and a speaker. That’s why she likes solo travel and solo hiking.

Solitary Wanderer
Aleah started Solitary Wanderer primarily just to chronicle her travels–mostly solo, but occasionally with friends or travel buddies. The first entry was written in El Nido, Palawan in the Philippines, about a Danish movie that talked about the protagonist’s regrets of not traveling the world while he still could.
After a year or two, she realized that she had readers! These readers started commenting on her posts and sending her emails about how her posts inspired them to travel more, or to travel solo. While most of her posts are about the destinations she visited, quite a few are also inspirational, tips on traveling solo, or thoughts about solo travel.
Be My Travel Muse
Kristin’s vision of a better world is one where more women are empowered, brave, and confident in their abilities. She believes that we become the chief architect of our own destiny. Everything is new and our entire surroundings are an opportunity to grow. Kristin’s purpose is to provide resources to make traveling more accessible, adventurous, and immersive for all of us.
“I know that’s not easy, and it can be pretty scary to go somewhere you’ve never been before, especially if you’re going it alone.”

The Pink Backpack
Stephanie Huff describes herself as a 30 year old PhD student and solo female traveler with a knack for misadventure. Steph has been attacked by a chimpanzee in Tanzania, drove a 35,000£ car rental into a ditch in Scotland, got food poisoning 10,000 ft up a mountain in Colombia and nitrogen narcosis 120 ft below the ocean in Belize. Sounds painful! But maybe worth it?
Steph says that she is basically the modern-day hybrid of Bridget Jones and Indiana Jones – her life is full of super awkward moments and crazy adventures. For your entertainment, she writes about them right there on her blog.
Claire’s Itchy Feet
Claire is a solo female adventure traveler and she started this blog to help women to travel solo and go on more adventures. If you’re wondering where the name “itchy feet” comes from you should know it is a common term for someone who can’t stay in one place for long and loves to travel and explore new places. Claire went through a lot at a young age – which you can read all about on her blog – but she also took steps to become better. She joined the Navy and cleaned herself up!
There is a lot more to her story but in September 2016 she began the next chapter of her life as a Digital Nomad. She had $600 in her bank and a one-way ticket to Guatemala. She didn’t speak Spanish, she knew no one and she had no plan other than that she wanted an adventure!
Women on the Road
Leyla took her first solo trip at the age of 15… Now she is staring at 50 years of travel and 96 countries!
This website is for women who have decided to see the world ON THEIR OWN. Forget the partner, forget the doubts – you can own this!
“Women travelers, especially those who travel solo, shouldn’t be seen as an exception, odd or different – we should be considered normal. No one questions how or why a man travels on his own, do they?
Women on the Road exists to help women with the nuts and bolts of solo travel: how to plan a trip, how to stay safe, what to take, how to budget, how to avoid getting lonely – all the things you face before, during, and after you travel. ”
We wish everyone a Happy International Women’s Day and we hope you have enjoyed reading about these amazing women. All of the women above can help you start your adventure, don’t waste time – take the first step today. These women show us that where there is a will, there is a way!
