Packing Tips for Carry-On

A great way to avoid dragging around big, heavy luggage? Don’t bring it at all, of course! So if you can manage with only a carry-on, first of all, congratulations! However, sometimes you simply need a lot of things such as Christmas gifts and clothes for the holiday. So what do you do then?! You make sure that you pack it in a way that uses every bit of space.

Inspired by this handy video by tastemadetravel, we’ve compiled a list of tips for packing your carry-on the best way possible.

6 Great Tips for Packing

1)  Pack Light

Start off by laying out everything you want to pack. Then take away 1/3, keeping only the most basic. We know it can be painful, but we promise you won’t regret it.

2) Pack heavy shoes in the bottom

Then fill them up with items like sunglasses or socks. You don’t want that space going to waste, right?

3) Make a ready-to-go toiletry bag

Keep a separate toiletry bag with all your travel essentials, then you never have to think about it again. Remember, you don’t have to bring ALL the things you keep at home — just the most necessary. If you travel with someone, you can share items like toothpaste and sunscreen — but make sure you’re using small containers that comply with flight regulations.

4) Fold your clothes “The KonMari way”

“KonMari,” when it comes to packing, is a space-saving method you can use to organize your clothes. Here you can find more examples on how to use “The KonMari Way,” which will allow you to pack more into your carry-on luggage. The method not only will give you more space, but it will give your clothing greater visibility, making it easier to quickly locate items.

5) Use space in your hat or cap

For items that are more fragile, place them near the top and preferably inside something. Hats and caps work well, or even inside pockets (just don’t forget they’re there!).

6) Pack your jewelry in one place

… and protect it with a sealable plastic bag. This will make all the pieces of jewelry easy to find and will help keep them from getting tangled up or damaged during travels.
