How to carry your gear while running

Don’t get slowed down by your gear

You’ve tied your laces, hit play on your favorite songs and are now ready to go hit the pavement. Running is arguably one of the easiest and most accessible ways to take care of your health and to keep in good shape, so it’s no wonder that so many people are doing it or have it on their list of New Year’s resolutions.

But just as you’re about to head out the door, you find yourself confused at the logistics of it. Where do you keep your keys, phone, or water bottle? Do you just hold them in your hand? But that’s exhausting and not to mention a bit disgusting (sweaty phone case, not an audience favorite).
Here are the easiest fixes to every runner’s dilemma: how to carry your stuff while out for a run.

Back to basics

Sometimes beginner runners start to overthink things and end up bringing more items with them than they actually need: phone, keys, tissues, energy bar, credit card, half liter bottle of water. All that for a 5K. If you’re running less than an hour, you don’t need to bring an energy bar with you, given you’ve eaten properly some time before your training. If there are water fountains on your track, then ditch the bottle or at least bring a smaller one which you refill regularly. You can also always bring a bit of money for you to buy a quick snack or drink, if you really feel you can’t do without. As it usually goes, less is more. Even with running.

Pay more attention when shopping for running clothes

Of course you want to feel good while running and for some people that also means looking good. But don’t make the mistake of choosing fashion over function. There are such running clothes that, although cute, leave you wanting when it comes to pockets. Take that into account when choosing your next jacket, pair of leggings or even shirt. Make sure that they have appropriate and secure pockets where you can keep the essentials. Some even have special compartments for running gels, apart from the usual zipped pocket.

Use a zippered wristband or armband

These are already quite popular among runners. Snugly fitted around your biceps, these bands can securely hold your phone, keys and even some money. If you do chose this option, consider switching to wireless headphones, so that you avoid having a cable swinging back and forth as you move your arms.

Buy a running belt

Not all runners feel comfortable with something ties around their arms. For those there is the alternative of buying a running belt. They fit perfectly around your waist, are big enough that you keep your phone, keys and money, but not so big so that you have a small pouch jiggling at your every step.

Turn your shoe into a wallet

Although the name might sound strange, it’s at least straightforward. A shoe wallet is a small pouch which can easily attach to your laces. Their big enough that you can keep your keys, cards or money in, but not so large that it affects your stride.
In case you don’t want to buy yet another piece of running equipment, things can be as easy as simply tying your key around your shoelaces. It’s a quick and easy fix that is all hassle free.

Consider a luggage storage service

This is especially helpful for destination races, for example, or if you’re planning a longer run further away from your home. By opting for a cheap and safe storage option you can leave a change of clothes, a reusable bottle of water and your monthly metro pass in a storage, so that you can run light, but smart. There are options out there for as little as $1 per hour, which is a small price to pay for the comfort of a fresh T-shirt and refreshments.

LuggageHero is one of such services, for example. LuggageHero is a quick, safe and easy solution for storing your bags. Costing as little as $1 per hour, LuggageHero uses only certified shops and provides insurance and security seal in over 38 cities around the world.
